Natural-looking tan

There is a new breed of ‘everyday' tanning products which gradually build-up colour allowing you to decide exactly how dark you want to go and there's less chance of the end result being streaky or orange.

Gone are the days when your ultimate goal on returning from holiday was to resemble the colour of your granny's dining table.  The deep tan which may have looked good in your 20s now looks ageing and is bad for your skin.  Due to advances in technology self-tanning has moved on since the days of orange wrists, patchy legs and strange biscuity smells.

New ‘everyday' tanning products are hassle-free, as you can simply replace your usual body moisturiser with a gradual tanning version.  Here are a few handy tints to make sure you achieve a subtle-looking tan:

  • Exfoliate- tan-erisers (moisturisers with a hint of fake tan) give a far better effect if you combine them with a bit of exfoliation.
  • A tanning timetable - to maintain a natural, even colour, start the habit of using a tan-eriser every two days and exfoliating on the third day.
  • Keep it natural - these colours allow you to build up the colour slowly so you can gauge your ideal colour so watch areas like your knees and elbows.
  • You can use more than usual - one of the main causes of streaky tan is being skimpy with application so you can use these products liberally.  Use a 50p size on each arm and three times this on each leg.  Use circular movement to blend in.
