Swing, thickness and general perkiness are what you're aiming for. To get the look:

Lesson one - clean hair is key and avoid visible elastic bands.  When pulling your hair into a pony leave a strand of hair free and wrap it round the elastic, securing it with a pin.

Lesson two - cheat fullness into a thin ponytail by spritzing it with hair spary then teasing/backcombing the underside with a brush.

Lesson three - a strict part and backcombing transforms a tail from mediocre to magnificent.  Side part your hair behind your ears.  Then create another parting running from ear to ear and use a paddle brush to backcomb a little on the crown.  Then pull back into a perfect pony.
