Find the right hair colour

9You may be immaculately dressed. Your make-up may cleverly disguise the lines. But if you’re still colouring or highlighting your hair in exactly the same way as you have done for the past 15 years, the chances are you’re not doing your hair any favours – not least because your skin tone will have changed over the years. Maybe you have never coloured your hair. In which case ask yourself if it is still as vibrant a shade as it was 10 years ago. The following tips will ensure your hair is working hard to take years off the way you look. Your hairdresser can do the rest.

Brunettes

Most skin tones can take a brunette shade and it’s a colour that really makes your hair look healthy so it’s a vibrant colour for anti-ageing. If you have fair skin and don’t want to go too dark then choose rich chestnut or tawny colours with caramel flashes. As you age your features fade along with your hair. Your eyes and skin gets paler so the rich chestnut that looked great in your 30s might not look so good now. Go a shade or two lighter than your natural colour, or opt for lowlights to hide grey rather than an all-over colour.

Red heads

If you’re naturally mousey, blonde or strawberry blonde you can usually carry off red. But avoid block colour or strong reds which can be harsh for older skin tones – go for flattering coppers or stick to natural lowlights that blend with your base colour for just a hint of warmth. Grey is less noticeable on redheads, but disguise it with warm highlights instead of all over colour. Choose a shade like the ones on the end of your hair as a subtle look.

Blondes

As you get older it’s all too easy to be the wrong kind of blonde. Avoid brassiness and too much bleach, both of which can add years and make you look cheap. Aim to soften your hair colour for a chic, more stylish and flattering look. Rather than opting for a full head of bleached highlights, your hairdresser could mix in tints, gradually increasing the ratio of tints to bleach over time. A good hairdresser will tend to use at least three different shades such as blonde, caramel and gold to add more depth and texture to the hair.

Raven hair

You can only get away with black hair if you’re Asian or black- unless you want to be a Morticia lookalike - but as we age even Asian and black skins can benefit from softening with warm, brown lowlights.

Glad to be grey

Some people’s hair goes white, which can look stunning and needn’t be ageing at all if it’s in good condition. Grey hair, however, is wiry and tends to be dry so a regular deep-conditioning treatment is a must to give it shine and lustre. Grey hair can also have a yellow tinge. This can be toned down with salon colour washes and by using special brightening shampoos and conditioners. Depending on your skin tone you can enhance grey with lowlights, so you have a little more pepper than salt.
